Anxiety is a normal part of life. How you deal with that anxiety can make the difference between feeling happier or feeling depressed on a regular basis. Typically, people’s first reaction to having a stressful day is to plop down on the couch, turn on the tube and start nibbling. This often gives way to overeating and hours of immobility as you try to process the stresses you face. These methods may make you feel better in the short run, but in the end, they could cause you to feel worse. A healthy diet with plenty of exercise can reduce your stress levels with the fringe benefit of increasing your overall health and trimming your waistline.

Breaking Up a Normal Work Day

If possible, try to exercise in settings that are different from the places where you spend the majority of your day. If you work in an office, step outside for a brisk walk. If you are a homemaker, visit a local gym where you can talk to other members while you exercise. A change in scenery can help you feel more comfortable and happy with your normal routine. Exercising outside whenever possible can be invigorating because it causes you to breathe fresh air deeply into your lungs for an extended period.

Resist the temptation to eat with coworkers if that means traveling to a restaurant. Bring your own lunch that includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains and small portions of lien protein. Be sure you have plenty of healthy non-perishable snacks at your desk so that you will never be tempted by the vending machine.

Regular Exercise Improves Sleep Patterns

Research has shown that regular exercise regimens can improve the sleep patterns of insomniacs. Exercise gives your body a chance to work muscles that may not be worked at any other part of the day. Burning those extra calories will help you be more ready to sleep at the end of the day.

A healthy diet is an important part of maintaining the high energy levels needed for regular exercise. Eat healthy foods to fuel your exercise program and reap the benefits at night. Having a sound eight-hour sleep will keep you feeling more alert. Proper rest reduces stress and increases your feeling of well-being.

Exercise Increases Endorphin Levels

Scientists have found that exercising triggers the release of feel-good hormones called endorphins. These hormones make you feel more energetic, which increases your happiness levels. You may notice that when you first begin to exercise, your body feels tired. This is less likely to occur if you eat a healthy and balanced diet most of the time.

As you extend your workout, you begin to feel stronger. The endorphins released into your body are providing an extra boost of energy so that you can maintain your increased activity longer. Even after you finish exercising, the endorphin levels remain high for hours. This endorphin rush leads to better moods and can help stabilize your moods over time. Stable moods are also helpful in managing stress in a healthy way, instead of coping with food.

Useful Low Impact Exercises

February 13, 2011
By

Exercise is one of the most important factors of living a healthy life.  Everyone, including children, adults, and older adults need physical activity every day.  For some, this may seem impossible due to joint problems, such as arthritis, muscle problems, and even those who are severely overweight.  However, options for exercise include much more than high impact activities, such as jogging and aerobics.  There are many low impact exercises that can benefit your health, while not adding unnecessary, and potentially harmful physical stress to your body.

Yoga has grown and continues to grow in popularity for many reasons.  It helps to tone your body, add strength and flexibility, and helps increase stamina and energy, while going easy on your muscles and joints.  There are many different types of yoga, such as Bikram, Ashtanga, and Jivamukti.  Each of these offers different features, but comes down to the same basics: series of poses that move your body in a slow and streamlined manner, focusing on working muscles all over.  Like most physical activities, if not done correctly, doing yoga can result in injuries such as strained muscles.  As long as you follow instructions, however, yoga is perfectly safe and is very beneficial to your health.

Tai Chi is a series of martial arts training forms that are practiced at a slow rate.  Tai Chi encourages muscle control, while also reducing stress.  It is compared to meditation, as you must focus your energy into the controlled movements required.  There are different styles of Tai Chi, some of which focus on health maintenance, while others focus on martial arts training.  Performing the poses keeps your body in constant motion.  Thousands of people all over the world practice Tai Chi long into their golden years, reaping the health benefits of the exercise, but not causing injury to their bodies in the process.

Another low impact exercise that is good for your whole body is swimming.  Swimming increases your heart rate and works your muscles without causing harm to your muscular system or your bones.  Swimming a few laps is not your only option for exercise in the water.  Water aerobics is a great way to get in shape and stay in shape.  Add to this some water weights, and you will get a serious work out!  Even if you’re not a great swimmer, or if you’re an older adult who doesn’t feel comfortable with committing to one hundred laps in the morning, water aerobics is a safe, fun way to work out. As always, when having a dip in the pool, be sure there is someone who can keep an eye on you and help if you need it.  Even in just a few feet of water, a muscle cramp can result in serious injury.  But if you take the proper precautions, you can have a great work out with no worries.

Give these exercises, which don’t require expensive equipment or a costly gym membership, a try, and you won’t be sorry.

How many calories should I eat a day to lose weight?

November 23, 2010

The amount of calories that a person eats in a day varies. It depends on factors like age, gender, current weight, current height, and the level of physical activities that the person has. If you want to know how many calories to lose weight, you can either consult a nutritionist who will calculate your daily calorie requirement, use online calorie calculators, or manually compute it. This article will guide you how to calculate your daily calorie requirement.

Factors that affect the daily calorie requirement

  • Age – the daily calorie requirement of a person is like a hill. Babies need fewer calories at the beginning and they it gradually increases until it reaches its peak during adolescence. The amount of calories that the body needs will then gradually decrease as the person gets older.
  • Gender – Men require more calories because they have faster metabolism compared to women due to their higher muscle mass and lesser fat percentage build.
  • Current weight and height – Basically, people who are heavier require more calories daily. However, people whose weight is proportionate to their height would require more calories than those who are lighter but taller. For example, a 5ft. 6in. person regardless of gender and age who weighs 100 pounds needs to increase her calorie intake because s/he is considered underweight. On the other hand, a person with the same height who weighs 150 pounds simply needs to maintain the amount of his/her calorie consumption because he’s weight is just right. However, a 5ft. 6in. person who weighs 200 pounds needs to reduce his daily calorie intake because s/he is already under the obese class 1 category.
  • Physical activities – the amount of calories that the person should consume also depends on the level of their physical activities. Unlike a person who lives a sedentary lifestyle, an active person needs more calories because s/he needs it to have constant supply of energy.

How to compute for your daily calorie requirement

  • For men:  66 + (13.7 x Weight in kilograms) + (5 x Height in centimeters) – (6.8 x Age in years) x Activity factor
  • For Women: 665 + (9.6 x Weight in kilograms) + (1.8 x Height in centimeters) – (4.7 x Age in years) x Activity factor

Activity Factor:

  • Sedentary lifestyle – X 1.2
  • Light Activity – X 1.375
  • Moderate Activity – X 1.5
  • Heavy Activity – X 1.7
  • Extremely Heavy Activity – x 2

So, how many calories should you eat in a day? Do the math and you’ll find out if you have been consuming more, less, or just the right amount of calories daily.

Slimming Belts: Do They Work?

September 24, 2010
By

You must have watched those ads about slimming belts and how they can help you with your weight lose endeavours. You must have heard that others have tried it and it never really worked as it was advertised. That’s just sad because you have always wanted to try it yourself. Then why don’t you? Just because it doesn’t work for someone else means it won’t work for you. Maybe they missed something or did something wrong that’s why they never achieved the expected results. You can do otherwise.

True, it seems like the best non-draining strategy there is to lose weight because you simply have to put on the belt on your waist, keep it on for at least 10 minutes and enjoy the massage-like sensation of your tummy muscles reacting and contracting to the disturbing force. What can be more relaxing than that? But that’s not all to it.

Yes, the belt works, but with a ten-minute session per day, don’t expect that you’ll have a slimmer body overnight or after 5 days of use. This is not a magic formula; it does take a long time. You didn’t put all that weight in a night so how do you supposed to take all the fats away in a few days?

This weight loss equipment should be backed up with a change of lifestyle for it to work properly. Meaning, you will have to work on your discipline and change your diet and get a regular exercise. Even slim people maintain a balanced diet and a regular exercise to maintain a healthy body, so you need it more.

What you should do is wear the belt while you’re having your workout. Then supplement the workout with a balanced diet and lots of water. This will not only make you live a healthier life, it will also tone your tummy muscles and give you more energy to do all your daily activities.

This waist slimming belt does work and that’s a guarantee but it is not a stand-alone device. Surely you don’t expect to have a smaller waist while you pig out on junk foods and stay lazy all day in front of your television do you? It works and it is but a good addition to your weight loss regime if you already started on one.

P90X Rips Your Body

August 5, 2010
By

Extreme home fitness workout program, P90X, is a system that claims to rip your body in 90 days. Up to 83% of the people who have used the product rated it 4-5 stars. The product is as expected; DVDs and written materials provided along are good too. There is a fitness test in it too which is quite extreme. People often can not pass it, and have to send the product back. This results in a loss of money.

The workouts are hard, long and require a commitment. Hard workouts can knock one out unless he/she has athletic aptitude. The video trainer has a positive attitude as well. He has covered all the aspects of flexibility, stamina and strength quite well. Other training programs only focus on a certain area, but P90X focuses on all areas.

The one restriction with this product is that it is not for very obese people. It is for attaining a better shape when already in good health, and not to attain a lesser weight. Yet it provides a good start for beginners and gets them into shape decently.

Unlike Power 90, P90X workouts are non-repeating. The workouts are expanded on a bigger scale. The program is not expensive when DVDs and written materials are counted too. Supplements recommended are expensive. Generally the pros weigh more than its cons and help in rating the program as a very good workout program. The best thing about the program is its high level of customization. One can arrange the program according to his/her goals. If one wants to loose more weight, the program can be rearranged into P90X Lean. The equipment one might need other than the program include a yoga mat, dumbbells, and a chin up bar.
